Inspired by Motorsport

Spending everyday with cars and motorbikes will influence your appearance after a while, probably without you even realising it. We obviously need certain things when riding a motorbike like a helmet, jacket, boots, a jersey… but a lot of these things end up crossing over into everyday life too. The same goes for cars; I could crawl around the floor of my workshop in a dress but it’s not that practical, so I end up dressing like a boy because it’s easier and more comfortable. The result of this mash-up seems to be a style heavily influenced by motorsport mixed with tomboy – practical, no-nonsense, not bothered, quickly get it on so I can go fast! That sort of thing.

With that in mind, time for some shameless self promotion to illustrate my point…

Since acquiring a 1970s Honda SL100 the retro racing awesomeness of my little hellion has had a major impact on my recent choices of attire. I’ve always loved vintage race gear anyway, but I’m especially loving Motocross jerseys. Authentic 70s/80s ones are crazy expensive and seem to mainly be in America, but there are some new jerseys out there with a bit of a retro look, old skool racing colours and graphics. Fox Racing obviously do this well and whilst searching for jerseys I got very distracted by everything else they had. As well as technical important things, I also found everyday loveliness to add to my petrol fuelled wardrobe. Teaming all this with my existing bits and pieces I’ve created some new favourite outfits that I haven’t taken off. Seriously, living in them.

The moral of my waffeling is, you don’t have to look like a Ferrari threw up on you just because you love cars or wander around in high vis and a helmet just because you love bikes. There are ways to give a head-banging nod to our reason for living without looking like a moron. A lot of us don’t really think much about it, or even realise we’re projecting our petrol head obsession onto ourselves but it turns out we do and I like it, I can’t think of anything else I would rather influence my threads than motorsport and custom classics.
